What do I need for a notary appointment?
Prepare your document, confirm acceptable identification and witnesses with the provider, and agree the location, timing and price before booking.

Start with the document recipient
Ask what document is needed, whether witnesses are required, and whether the recipient accepts remote notarization. Have the document prepared before arranging a notary.
Confirm every signer’s participation
Make sure all required signers can attend and speak directly with the notary. Ask which identification is acceptable. Do not assume every document or ID will qualify.
Confirm location and timing
Provide the city, ZIP code, local time zone, preferred time and a backup window. For care facilities, confirm visitor access and avoid sending medical information.
Ask when to sign
Some acts require signing in the notary’s presence. Ask the provider for instructions before signing. A notary may decline if applicable requirements are not met.
General appointment guidance, not legal advice. Current state rules and your document recipient’s requirements control your appointment.
